The news from WWDC has been absorbed by now. Apple is switching to Intel CPUs. It was quite an amazing announcement. There was definite buzz in the room when Steve Jobs started talking about "transitions".
I lived through the transition from the Motorola 68K series to the Power PC. I was working at ACI (now 4D Inc.) and spent the summer in Paris working on getting builds of the 4th Dimension suite ready for both 68K and Power PC platforms. We called them fat binaries back then. Fat binaries are back again with a new name - Universal Binaries.
I think the transition will be good for Apple. Leaving Intel to worry about the guts of the machine frees Apple to do what they do best. The benefit to customers should be better software running on cheaper well designed machines.
