According to this article in the NY Times open source is spreading to Biotechnology techniques. If this gathers momentum like the related open source software movement...

I am hopeful. The tools are becoming more broadly available to enable this. Government agencies that fund most research (and the universities that do most of it) are supporters of open source and have largely embraced it. I think it is just a matter of time...

There is a large awareness that sharing technology and know-how is useful on loads of ways. so its good that the government is actually playing a part...
From the grass roots, check out the www.BIOS.net initiative. Its a project with a lot of ideas and a lot of action as well!
